A House In Between – contemporary clarity and mid-century charm in an Edwardian setting.

London, United Kingdom

Situated on a uniquely shaped triangular site within a conservation area near Stockwell Station, this single-family home strikes a careful balance between contemporary minimalism and contextual sensitivity. The street-facing façade follows the established rhythm, proportions, and materiality of the surrounding Victorian and Edwardian buildings, ensuring the new addition blends seamlessly into the historic streetscape while retaining a distinct, modern identity.

The design responds directly to the challenges and opportunities of the site’s geometry, with a carefully composed plan that maximises natural light and garden views. The restrained, minimal exterior opens to an interior of rich material warmth, where mid-century modern influences—expressed through natural timber finishes, clean lines, and bespoke joinery—fulfil the client’s vision for a calm, inviting home.

Through a harmonious dialogue between old and new, the house demonstrates how contemporary architecture can both complement and revitalise the character of its historic setting.
