The House of Courtyards — a contemporary Riyadh home rooted in tradition and crafted for modern living.

Riyadh, KSA

Al Khorshed House is conceived as the prototype for a new suburban neighbourhood in Riyadh, setting the standard for quality, comfort, and cultural resonance within the Al Khorshid development. Its design reinterprets the spatial traditions of the Saudi home through a contemporary lens — balancing privacy, climate responsiveness, and a refined architectural character.

Organised around a sequence of interlocking courtyards, the home uses these open-air voids as spatial anchors, drawing daylight deep into the interior, encouraging natural ventilation, and creating moments of calm between living zones. The massing breaks the building into smaller articulated volumes, shaded by timber screens and protected from the desert sun, while maintaining a strong sense of enclosure and privacy from the street.

The material palette draws from the warm earth tones of the region, pairing textured, compressed earth walls with soft plaster finishes. Openings are carefully placed and shaded, filtering light into the interiors and framing views of the courtyards. Roof terraces and shaded rooftop spaces offer additional living areas, with the flexibility to accommodate future needs.

As the flagship residence for the Al Khorshed suburban development, this home embodies a vision where tradition and modernity meet — delivering a domestic environment that is culturally grounded, environmentally responsive, and crafted for the rhythms of contemporary Saudi life.
